This Week's Assignment...
Question: Your task is to select the best shipper for your company. Compare three shippers, such as FedEx (www.fedex.com), UPS (www.ups.com), and US Portal Service (www.usps.gov). Consider not only cost but also such issues as delivery speed, pick up schedules, drop-off location, tracking ability, and ease of use of the web site. Which service that you select? Explain why?

FedEx Corporation

FedEx provides access to a growing global market place through a network of supply chain, transportation, business and related information services.  We choose FedEx because of these factors:

USE OF THE WEB SITE IN FedEx CORPORATION

FedEx has always been a technology trailblazer, and the success of FedEx.com is testament to that. The company was one of the first to harness the power of the Internet 10 years ago to provide fast, easy and convenient service options for its customers. FedEx made waves in the early 90s when the Internet was still a recent phenomenon, launching its Web site in 1994 with a bold new package tracking application, one of the first true corporate Web services. Over time, FedEx continued to pioneer new technological territory, such as when it became the first transportation company with Web site features that allowed customers to generate their own unique bar-coded shipping labels and request couriers to pick up shipments. Today, fedex.com hosts nearly 15 million unique visitors per month and handles more than 3 million package tracking requests daily. Electronic transactions account for almost two-thirds of the more than 6 million shipments FedEx delivers daily. Keynote Systems consistently lists fedex.com in the top 10 of its internet performance index for businesses, and the Web site has been praised by the Web Marketing Association, Week and others.

PICK UP SCHEDULE

On average, FedEx Express and FedEx Ground packages are scanned at least a dozen times from pickup to delivery. At pickup, each package's shipping label bar code is immediately scanned to record the pickup time, destination and delivery commitment. The scanned information is uploaded to the FedEx mainframe. Bar codes are scanned again at every key step of the shipping process, allowing customers to follow the status of their shipments throughout the journey.

FedEx's newest data collection device for couriers incorporates a micro-radio for hands-free communication with a printer and mobile computer in the courier's delivery vehicle. Called the PowerPad, the devices use Bluetooth wireless technology that allows FedEx couriers to communicate with each other within 30 feet of their vehicle.
